Beautifully maintained and interestingly laid out, it’s a course that is deceptive in its difficulty. With enormous bunkers and water often in play, there’s always something to keep you focused. Play to your handicap around here and you can feel like a job well done.

West Cliffs
It might have only opened in 2017 but this Cynthia Dye designed course is an absolute joy and as good a golfing experience as you will find anywhere in Portugal.
An hour by car from Lisbon, West Cliffs clings to the Atlantic coastline, offering staggering views across the ocean. And, despite still only a young course, there’s a rugged naturalism in the layout that harks back to the traditions of the sport itself.
Beautifully kept fairways cut a path through the 200-plus hectares of natural vegetation and undulating sand dunes. Everything about the course and resort has a classical yet wholly modern vibe. And, at more than 6,300m from the back tees it offers plenty of bite to test the low handicappers, while there’s plenty of forgiveness and fun to be had off friendlier tees for the social golfer as well.

Troia
Not to be outdone by its young pretender, Troia is yet another course within reach of Lisbon that simply demands to be experienced on any golfing holiday to the region.
Designed by Robert Trent Jones Snr and routinely ranked as one of the best in Portugal, the course, located to the south of the capital on the Troia peninsula offers a very different kind of golfing experience.
A ferry from Setubal gets you to the course, which offers a delightful blend of parkland with coastal links. Another course that revels in its Atlantic scenery, the course itself offers plenty of interest thanks to Jones’ clever design.
Pine bordered fairways require accuracy thanks to tricky doglegs and well-placed bunkers while the slick greens need care to negotiate. Nevertheless, thanks to a range of tees from which to play, this is a course that welcomes all and is a thrill for golfers to play.
Oitavos Dunes
Drive for half an hour towards the very Western edge of the country, and indeed the continent, and you’ll be rewarded with a joyous golfing experience at Oitavos Dunes.
This is another course blessed with natural beauty and jaw-dropping scenery. From the big skies and rugged power of the Atlantic to the spectacular Sintra Mountains in the distance.
And, while there’s plenty to admire about the backdrop, this is no mere sightseeing destination. Because the golf course that evolved on this Western peninsula is one of true quality, genuine challenge and tremendously enjoyable.
Using the landscape to its advantage, each hole requires thought as you plot your path among trees, dunes, water and sand traps. While the greens, delightfully maintained as they are, offer care thanks to a firm roll and sneaky slopes.

Penha Longa
Penha Longa, translated to Long Rock, is just a short distance from the bustle of Lisbon. Yet despite the expansion of the location to a five-star golf resort and hotel, there remains a somewhat sedate, rurally secluded atmosphere to the destination.
The twenty-seven holes of the resort are set among the luscious Portuguese countryside, with the Sintra Mountains offering a scenic backdrop. And while there’s some fun to be had on the nine-hole course, golf tourists will typically come to Penga Longa to tackle Atlantico.
The Robert Trent Jones Jr course is a former host of the Open De Portugal and yet another wonderful experience blended from great design, immaculate maintenance and a natural environment that lends itself to quality golf.
Praia D’El Rey
Like its local counterparts, Praia D’El Rey is a stunning blend of coastal, links-like golf with more than a hint of parkland based around the natural flora.
The resort is about an hour from the city, heading Northwest to the Atlantic coast that lends its rugged backdrop.
Measuring more than 6,400m from the back tees, it’s a long course and can feel longer still when the wind picks up. But it’s not a course exclusively for the big hitters, as thought and concentration are the key components of a good round. Make the fairways and you can keep your card rolling along.
But wayward balls can fall prey to the dunes, the rough or one of the particularly imposing bunkers sprinkled across the course.
